JOLLY ROGER CALAVERA
11 / 2017

On the occasion of El Díde Los Muertos, the lively Mexican celebration honouring the dead, Gufram presents a special limited edition of the skull-shaped Jolly Roger armchair designed by Fabio Novembre in the new colours Calavera White and Calavera Black. The brand’s partner in Mexico City, European Design, will hold an exclusive event on Novembr 1st to unveil this new collaboration: the armchairs are hand-painted with the traditional graphics used to decorate the skulls for this famous festivity reinterpreted in a contemporary way by Fabio Novembre himself.

These versions of the Jolly Roger have been developed specifically for Mexico due to the fact that the skull is one of the symbols of Dia de Los Muertos - literally, the Day of the Dead. That is what inspired Fabio Novembre to reinterpret this armchair, covering it with typical Mexican graphic signs: lace, crosses, flowers as well as bones and teeth have been carefully hand-painted by Gufram’s artisans, therefore each piece is unique.

The tradition of decorating skulls and skeletons comes from the idea that the dead would be insulted by mourning or sadness, thus the festivity celebrates the lives of the deceased with food, drink, parties, and activities the dead enjoyed in life. Dia de los Muertos recognizes death as a natural part of the human experience, a continuum with birth, childhood, and growing up to become a contributing member of the community. On this day, the dead are part of the community, awakened from their eternal sleep to participate in the celebrations with their loved ones.

Jolly Roger is made in roto-moulded plastic, thus suitable also for the outdoors. This peculiar armchair is consistent with the attitude that unites all Gufram's products: an ironic and pop vibe blended with originality and craftsmanship.
